THE SILENT TWINS

TWINS WHO DECIDED NOT TO SPEAK

The fascinating tale of the twin girls from Haverfordwest who decided, as young children, not to speak to anyone else and who were later misdiagnosed and committed to Broadmoor, was the subject of our June meeting.

Tim Thomas was involved in their case from the start as a psychologist and is still in contact with the surviving twin and others involved, but has never before spoken in public about it, despite it being the subject of multiple documentaries and films world-wide. Tim cautioned against believing everything you see about the case on the internet.

The talk was followed by a lively discussion of the ethical and judicial implications and other lessons to be learned from the way the case was handled. The audience was left with a sympathetic understanding of the situation in which all concerned found themselves.

As well as thanking Tim for his engaging talk, we also thanked him for stepping in at the last minute by bringing his talk forward from November.

Back to Top

The July talk was given by two ladies who provided us with a fascinating story of a family coffee plantation in Tanzania, with interesting facts about coffee and its production. We were given a coffee tasting, which illustrated what we had been told about the various types of coffee.

They now run a mobile coffee stall which visits local events and the Nag’s Head on Tuesday mornings. They also sell their coffees each week at the new market hall in Cardigan Guildhall.

Our trip to the Urdd Camp at Llangranog was a great success, despite a disappointing turnout due to other appointments, illness, etc. Those who attended enjoyed an extremely warm welcome from the staff, with lashings of coffee, tea, cakes and bara brith. We were able to look back over the history of the site with many photo albums of people enjoyinf themselves in various ways over the years.

We then had an indoor archery session, with varied success but universal enjoyment and excellent instructors..

This was followed by an illustrated talk about the way the site has developed in recent years and a run through of the 23 activities now offered. A lively question and answer session was followed by an excellent lunch in the dining room, with lovely views over Cardigan Bay and a leisurely period of chatting over more coffee!

The weather could have been kinder, but the general consensus was that the visit had been “brilliant”.

Phil Archer!

The arrow in the Bull was the instructors!
